    The Dominican Republic on the world map: Where is it?

    Many tourists call the Dominican Republic “Dominicana” because in Spanish the country name is “RepúblicaDominicana”. Those who do not know much about this relatively small country in such cases ask, “In what country is this place, Dominicana?” Those who have already learnt about this beautiful state explain that “Dominicana” is not just a country but also a republic – the Dominican Republic.

    • In the Western hemisphere;
    • Near the American continent;
    • In the West Indies;
    • On one of the Greater Antilles islands;
    • Between the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico;

    The West Indies is a general name of the archipelago extended like an arch with a length of about 3500 kilometers long between South America and North America. It is considered that this chain of islands is extended from the mouth of the Orinoco River to the peninsulas of Florida and Yucatan.

    The archipelago was added to the map during the voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1492-1504 and was being considered as India for some time. When the error was discovered, the archipelago started to be called the West Indies.

    This archipelago includes three groups of islands in the West Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea: the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles.

    The Bahamas islands is a region including approximately 500 islands to the southwest from Florida. Its population,just like the population of the Bermudas, denies cultural affinity with the rest of the West Indies, although these islands form part of the same island chain of the archipelago.

    The Greater Antilles is a grouping of the larger islands including Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti whose largest part is occupied by the Dominican Republic,Puerto Rico and some islets, for example Cayman Islands – an autonomous British overseas territory and offshore financial haven; and Curaçao and Aruba belonging to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

    The Lesser Antilles includes islands populated by the citizens of Spain, England, France, Holland and the Netherlands. This grouping of islands consists of the Virgin Islands – approximately 50 islands belonging to the USA; the British Virgin Islands, which are still the British overseas territory; Montserrat; Martinique and Guadeloupe – the French oversees territory; Trinidad and Tobago, as well as a chain of other islands considered independent states.

    Despiteitsconsiderably small territory, the Dominican Republic features 6 international airports:

    • Punta Cana (in Punta Cana)
    • El Cibao (in Santiago)
    • Las Americas (in Santo Domingo)
    • Gregorio Luperon (in Puerto Plata)
    • Samana El Catey (inSamana)
    • Casa del Campo (in La Romana)

    Airports of the Dominican Republic handle both international and local flights. One of the most popular airports for business trips and local tourism is Las Americas located in Santo Domingo. The capital with the population of over a million people boasts many places of interest, always blooming cultural and business life, attracting tourists who travel with absolutely various purposes.

    So, which Dominican airport handles European and US flights? Almost all Dominican airports receive flights from the USA and European countries. For example, Punta Cana International Airport handles flights from and to Germany, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, and France. It is also a destination of many tourists from the USA, who fly from New York, Chicago, Miami, and other cities.

    Punta Cana International Airport handles the largest number of flights from the USA. This airport is located in the eastern part of the island. Moreover, it is the first private international airport in the world, since Grupo Punta Canacompany constructed it in 1984 especially for the development of the touristic area of Punta Cana.

     Airports In Punta Cana

    Since the airport is located in the eastern region of the Dominican Republic, near the majority of hotels of the touristic zone, it is such a popular touristic destination for travelers throughout the year! The airport of Punta Cana handles both scheduled and charter flights, providing services to up to four million people in a year.

    It is worth mentioning that the airport has quite an authentic look: designed in the Caribbean style, it does not have windows nor doors; what it has is a roof on piles, surrounded by beautiful palm trees along its perimeter. The roof is made of a high-end eco material – cana palm leaves of the local endemic palm tree. It is an excellent solution for a tropical country because it provides ventilation of the airport halls throughout the year.
